REVIEW | BEAUTY and the BEAST

Once upon a time in Manila, there is Beauty and the Beast...

Musical Theater seems to be a Big Hit in the Metro after several Musical Presentation to Hit the Theaters from CCP to NewportPerforming Arts Theater in Resorts World Manila. There's a fascination now, uprising to the Filipino theater goer. Chicago just ended it's two week presentation last December at the newly opened Solaire Theater at Solaire. Due to my hectic schedule, I was not able to see it.

I opted to see Beauty and the Beast since it was a childhood favorite and a timeless classic. The scenes and the songs are still vivid in my brain so I was so thrilled when a friend gave me free tickets to see the show. Awesome free tix to begin with, and finishing my editing sched the night before the show. Excited to see the show, the I brave the Saturday 5:30 pm traffic and headed to CCP, Tanghalang Nicanor Abelardo. I came in 30mins earlier than 8pm so I grab some fries and a drink before the show. I hurriedly finish my fastfood so that I can enter the Theater, thinking that my friends would be inside however in a very Pinoy Fashion My friends came in 10mins before the show I was already in my seat by then. 5mins before the show starts, the orchestra started playing. Comparing it to other shows the theater was not full and there are still some late comers who were allowed to enter the theater.

Staging

Beauty and the Beast falls flat on the staging of the play. From the prologue of the story until the courtesy call. There were time that the characters of the play seems not to maximize the CCP Stage.
However there were some parts that the staging was quite spectacular, especially when they had the scene inside the bar when they sang "No One Is Like Gaston", that part was quite memorable because they did not just maximize the stage, they also used the beer mugs as a percussion instrument. But everything else was not as magical.

Characters

Casting was quite mediocre in this particular play. Belle was impressive in her singing but it was just that it. Beast was quite small for his built, he doesn't seem to have this frightening stance or any sign that he can scare the hell out of me, and most of the time he's not as beastly as I have imagined from the Animated Film or TV Series. Cogsworth, Lumiere and Mrs. Pots met my expectations and the most impressive was Gaston.

Overall

The play falls short on my expectations. I'll give Beauty and the Beast three stars out of five.
